Burn-out: How hypnotherapy can help you recover

What is burn out, and how would you recognise symptoms of burn-out? Read on to discover more….

Ever since Jacinda Ardern, PM of New Zealand, admitted in January 2023 there was ‘nothing left in the tank’, conversations about and awareness of burn-out have become a hot topic. My guess is that most people, of all ages and backgrounds, can accept that they have felt burnt out at some point in their lives.

What is 'burn-out'?

According to Mosby Medical Compendium, burn-out is described as depletion of mental or physical energy after a period of chronic sustained stress, often amplified by work related issues and physical ill health. Symptoms vary from individual to individual but, typically, sufferers lose concern or respect for colleagues and others in their lives. Stressful working conditions, unmet targets, increased workload and work colleague’s deficit of input can all be contributing factors to the sensation of burn out.

Stress

As a hypnotherapist, the key word here is STRESS. Cumulative stress builds up inside the mind, causing the sufferer to think irrationally and make poor decisions. Often, sleep is affected and that constant feeling of fatigue and tiredness pervades the day and exacerbates stress levels during the bedtime routine and often during the night time sleep cycles.

What can be done?

Talking therapy, or psychotherapy, will enable you to untangle the thoughts and concerns which fill your mind, to help you focus on the good things in your life, and encourage you to recognise when you are thinking from your rational mind, and deflect your primitive responses away from making ill judged decisions.

Hypnosis in the form of hypnotherapy will help diminish your stress levels, freeing up your mind to make those good decisions and recognise what is false and limiting to you. It is a supremely relaxing experience, and you can expect to see results after 4-5 sessions. As my client, I will also encourage you to use self hypnosis and teach you some breathing techniques in between sessions to augment the therapy. These are skills which you can take forward with you to maintain your optimum well-being.

As a sleep consultant, we can also look at ways to manage your sleep better, and to implement distraction techniques to help you in those dark wee hours of the morning when all you want to do is just go back to sleep…
